Previously, I wrote an article about how the culture of “Ran-katsu” has taken root in Japan.
We are pleased to announce that our Rankatsu event concluded successfully!

Our Randoseru Journey at Kaban Kobo Yamamoto
With our child starting elementary school next spring, we’ve officially finished our “Rankatsu” – the randoseru shopping — a big milestone for families in Japan!
We ordered our randoseru from Kaban Kobo Yamamo, an independent, long-established randoseru manufacturer located in Nara Prefecture.
This manufacturer has branches in Ginza, Yokohama, and Umeda, and also holds exhibitions at department stores nationwide.

We chose a gorgeous camel-colored one. Its soft, elegant shades make it a sophisticated color that can be worn regardless of age or gender.

At Kaban Kobo Yamamoto, you can have nameplates custom-made like below. We ordered our surname engraved in alphabet letters.

Our ordered Randoseru is expected to delivered this summer.
Right now, we’re counting down the days together, wondering, “When will it get here?”
*It’s often the parents who get more excited than the kids.
The Deciding Factor in Choosing Kaban Kobo Yamamoto
The deciding factors for choosing Kaban Kobo Yamamoto for us were as follows:
- They have physical stores where you can see and select items in person
- They offer comprehensive aftercare, making it easy to request repairs
- They respond sincerely to inquiries
- Their designs are built to last
- Universal beautiful design
The randoseru is not a small purchase for many parents. What kid and parents look for in a randoseru varies from child to child and family to family, so I recommend take your kids time choosing!
There’s a factory right behind the store!
Right next to this store is a randoseru factory, and amazingly, visitors can freely tour the factory inside! You can actually see and touch the materials and leather colors used in the randoseru, making it a fantastic way to get a detailed sense of the one you want.

Many skilled workers are actually working at the factory. There’s a tour route inside the factory, and the people working there are very kind and explain things to you in detail. (I think it’s only in Japanese)
Factory’s route map

Surprisingly giant randoseru! A staff member called out, “Why not try it on?”

- Reservations are required for factory tours and visits to Yamamoto Kaban kobo.
- They also carry outlet items, so you might want to check them out!
Believe It or Not — We Reserved It More Than a Year Ago
Actually, we reserved the randoseru over a year before our child starts school.
You might think, “Wow, that’s so early!” and I also thought the same way. But here’s the truth:
💡 Popular models sell out quickly
Randoseru market is very unique. There’s a huge variety of colors and designs. Especially handcrafted or limited-edition backpacks often close reservations as early as spring, well before school begins.
Make Once-in-a-Lifetime Randoseru Shopping Experience a Happy Memory
For your child, this backpack will be a treasured companion for six years.
We truly hope your family finds the perfect randoseru that you can all say, “We’re so glad we chose this one!” 🍀
What I Did When Choosing Where to Purchase
Research, Exhibitions, and Careful Family Decisions are the things we did before purchase.
- Requested catalogs to compare options 📬
- Attended exhibitions to see and try on real randoseru🏢
- Let our child try carrying different models 🎒
- Listened carefully to what our child wanted 👧👦
Balancing both our child’s preferences and our own viewpoints, we took our time and chose carefully. Thanks to starting early, we found the perfect randoseru we all love. ◎
Some manufacturers offer a service where you can try on items via home delivery.
For Those Just Starting Randoseru Shopping
✅ Early action is the key to success!
Choosing a randoseru is a wonderful time to celebrate your child’s growth.
But with so many options, it can also be overwhelming.
- Popular models won’t wait — move early!
- It’s important to compare materials, features, and colors carefully
- Visiting exhibitions helps you see how your child reacts to the backpack in person
We hope every family finds a randoseru that makes both parents and kids happy! 🌸
Need Help or Feeling Stuck? Feel Free to Ask!
Randoseru shopping is surprisingly information-heavy:
- What’s the difference between Clarino, leather, and Cordovan?
- How do I choose between handcrafted and mass-produced?
- Is it too late to buy now for 2026?
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
